Guys we all knew that India is a having abundant quantity of spices .From many years the spices were the important commodities India was exporting to the other countries. Contribution of spices to the Indian agricultural export is also high. To achieve many of these things Govt. of India has established the spices board to guide the framers and traders, helps in quality upgradation and value addition and finally export of the species. Major Functions of Spices Board:

1. For the formulation and implementation of programmes for better production.

2. For implementation of quality improvement methods through systematic research and development activities.

3. To imparting education and training to growers, processors and other stakeholders.

4. Providing registration and licensing.

5. Board is acting as a data bank and communication channel for importers, exporters etc.

Accreditation Systems for Quality Upgradation and Value Addition 

For exportable products standards, branding were very important they help to get good price for the products. The spices board focuses is on quality upgradation and value addition through issuing the Indian spices logo, spice house certificates and brand name registration. So let look at these things.

Indian Spices Logo:

* Often consumers /customers will look at the company name or logo on the products to get best quality products. So the spices logo will help the customers to select best quality spices and also ensures the quality of the product.

* The logo will be displayed on all the packs of products approved the board.

* The logo will be given to the exporters / traders who follow the certified processing and quality control measures prescribed by the spices board.

* The traders/exporters who want to get this logo need to apply for it after the inspection and testing of the products will be done by the officials and finally logo will be provided.

Spices House Certificate :

* It is a measure which aims at the quality upgradation process. The spices house certificate programme will look at exporters having processing facilities.

*Spices house certificate is given to the processors, who possess, their own processing facilities and infrastructure, with a competence and commitment to maintain quality.

* Quality should be maintained at all the stages of processing right from processing to the final shipping.

Brand Name Registration :

* As we know that there were the large number of traders in the global market to attract the consumers and acquiring more of market share.

*Visual appearance which silently communicates the desired message to the consumers.

*Selection of package is very important for the exporters to assist them spices board has introduced a system to register the brand names with it and this registration is  also extended  to those who satisfy standards of packaging  and labelling.

*Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), Mumbai helps the board in forming the specified norms for packaging.

Various Schemes of Board

Spices board is promoting the exporters/ growers through different schemes.so lets study these schemes:

1. Technology transfer and Processing Upgradation:

This scheme is meant for improving the processing technology of the registered manufacturer exporter. An assistance up to 33.33 percent of the cost of developing /adopting technology, subject to a maximum Rs. 10 lakh.

2. Assistance for Research and Development process:

Interested exporters can undertake the research through private labs/ research station/agencies and will get financial assistance of 50 percent of their research cost from the board approved by the department of science and technology.

3. Assistance to Stalls Rent for participation in the International Food Fairs:

This scheme is to facilitate the exporters to put their stalls for their products for promotion as well as for taking orders in the different international food fairs. Exporters will get 50 percent (maximum 1 lakh) of the stall rent from the board as financial assistance.

4. Product Promotion Abroad:

Under this scheme registered exporters of branded consumer packs will get assistance of 50 percent (max. 5 lakh) of cost of promotional activities undertaken abroad.

5. Packaging Development:

In this scheme registered exporters will get an assistance for development of improved packaging to their products. Exporters will get an assistance 50 percent (max.2 lakh) of the packaging cost.

6. Assistance for Sales Promotion Tours Abroad:

The exporters with logo/spices house certificate /registered brands are eligible for this scheme. Exporters were encouraged to take business promotion trips abroad and also for participation in international trade fairs. Assistance of 50 percent of the air fare for one trip in a year for one representative. Maximum of Rs.60000 for logo/spice house certificate holders and Rs.40000 for registered brand owners.

7. Reimbursement of Air Freight/Courier Charges for Sending Sample Abroad:

Under this scheme exporter who were possessing logo or spice house certificate will get the assistance. An amount of Rs.50000 per exporter per year for air freight/sending spices samples by courier to buyers abroad.

8. Brand Promotion Loan:

The board assists the logo exporters in undertaking long term promotional programmes to promote their brand in overseas markets. They will get interest free loan to the extent of 50 percent of their proposed expenditure on promotional programmes.

9. Modern Cleaning, Processing and Storage Facilities at Terminal Markets:

The scheme is meant for assisting the association of exporters, farmers, agricultural produce market committees etc., in setting up infrastructure facilities for hygienic ,cleaning, processing and storage for spices at assembling / terminal markets .The board will provide 50 percent of cost of construction and the fund will be released after the completion of structures only.   

Spice board of India acts an apex organization linking between the Indian exporters and the foreign importers along with development and worldwide promotion of Indian spices through certification and promotional schemes for the exporters.
